THE COUNTESS & THE REVOLUTIONARY

Research & Development CURVE, Leicester

25th - 29th OCT 2021

BY ANTHONY CLARK
BASED ON AN IDEA BY DEWI JOHNSON

In October 2021, Dewi successfully gained Arts Council Funding to workshop a new play looking at the life and relationship of the 18th Century aristocrat Madam Du Barry and her long  serving Bangladeshi servant Zamor. This Workshop production was supported by Curve, Leciester and Imagine If Theatre Company.

Through the prism of the past - in particular the intriguing relationship between Du Barry and Zamor - we want to reflect on contemporary attitudes to race and class. With a team of creatives we want to explore how language can be used as a weapon and how the urges that drive all humans - sex, money, survival - have not changed since the 18th century. We want to highlight how people of any background can relate to these things, no matter what their race or class is. Their story has never been told before. and we believe it would make an interesting piece of theatre, with a strong female lead and a male actor of East Asian heritage at the head of this project.

This project was generously mentored and supported by 'Imagine If' Theatre Company.
